Eco Club Meeting
20.06.12

  • Links with the School Council
    • The eco club and school council eco reps discussed how we can work together to solve the "eco issues" of the school. It sounded like the School Council had been very busy discussing the issues surrounding litter in the canteen. It would be great if we could combine our efforts.
  • A review of our year
    • The Eco Club answered some questionnaires about our experiences in the eco club this year and what the future holds for us. This information will be vital in planning for the future.
  • The Eco Blog
    • Learners will shortly be able to write on the blog themselves and will be tasked with recorded minutes from our meetings to write on our blog! Great work team!!

  • Staff Food Waste being composted
    • The Eco Club were informed that Staff at NHS are now composting. Some of the Eco Club are keen to get involved and to empty the caddy into the compost bin regularly.
  • Yellow fish
    • Yellow Fish is a campaign aimed at the whole community and everyone can get involved. For us, the scheme links in with the science and PSHE curriculum, cross curricular project work and the Eco Schools programme. We plan to choose "Yellow Fish" as a water project which would contribute towards our green flag application.
  • A.O.B
    • Ellie Barnett suggested an idea to combat litter issues in school. She proposed a scheme whereby learners were given warning cards. This was discussed in the Eco Club and we decided that it might need further consideration. Great idea Ellie!
    • Raised beds - We went out and investigated how are seedlings are progressing. The lettuce, strawberries, spring onions and cabbage had survived the dry weather really well! Below are some pictures:

    NHS Staff Compost Food Waste

As Newport High School gears up for an application towards a GREEN FLAG, the staff at NHS have been getting in the act and are now recycling food waste (with tea bags being top of the hit list!!). Once full, the caddy will be emptied into our outside compost bin in our raised beds area. Hopefully we will have lovely compost ready for next years raised beds!!!

    The ECO CLUB
    Eco Meeting
    30 May 2012

This Wednesday the ECO CLUB met and discussed the following:
    • Welcome School Council
      • The school council has nominated four members to join the eco club and to make better links between us. They will feed back to the School council of things we are trying to do and what are targets are. Hopefully we can help each other!!

    • Blog
      • The eco club were introduced to the blog that they had asked for, replacing the internet page on the school's home page. It can be found under the 'student links' section on the NHS homepage.
      • A number of learners suggested that they would like to write things onto the blog themselves. This will be investigated asap.
      • Learners will also be showing the blog to their classmates during TfL.

    • Raised bed project
      • We checked on the progress of the raised veggie bed. The seedlings looked a bit over whelmed by the recent hot spell. They were very grateful for the eco club watering them!!

    • AOB
      • None noted.
    Eco and out.

    The eco club!

    Green fingered Eco Club

    Fruit and Veg

On Wednesday 16th May, the Eco Club took advantage of some fine Welsh weather and planted some of our seedlings that we have sowed two weeks before!!! All together we planted Strawberry plants, Sunflower seedlings, Lettuce, Cabbage, and lots and lots of bulbs!

We also partially cleared our 'Natural Raised Bed' to encourage a diverse range of plants and flowers. Over the next few weeks we will be busy identify what species we have in the raised beds and monitoring them carefully.

    New School Allotment

A recent project supported by Business in the Community involved volunteers from Siemens spending the day working at Newport High School building ten raised beds to create an allotment. Andrew Reeks and ten other Siemens staff from Newport, Cwmbran, Bath, Manchester, Scotland and Germany designed the raised beds and funded the materials and resources to manufacture them. Students will now be able to take part in gardening, horticulture and environmental activities throughout the year. Barratt Homes contributed landscaping membrane, top soil and bark to complete the project.

The Eco Club recently spent some time clearing the raised beds ready for planting of bulbs for over the winter. We have now weeded and cleared four raised beds ready for use by the houses. The raised bed project is for any members of Branwen, Olwen, Pryderi and Taliesin who would like to test their green fingers and develop new skills (perhaps even make some money for the eco club!). The raised bed project will be taking place on Thursdays after school, from 3 till 3.30.

It was a huge job clearing the beds and we are very grateful for the time and effort from everyone… so thank you! Let’s get planting…

If you would like to donate any used or unwanted gardening items, please either drop them into reception or directly to Mr Whitehead.
    Thank you.
